Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary urban elements

Ryder Architecture and NBBJ Architecture’s vast new hospital makes the most of its rural setting to create the UK’s first commonly referred “Garden Hospital”. The new hospital is located on a greenfield site on the outskirts of the Scottish town of Dumfries. It is conceived as a garden hospital, with a design focused on landscape made possible by its rural setting.

Fira landscape design masterplanned the hospital in a new woodland campus to reduce the scale of the building and to limit the impact of the development on the surrounding countryside and promoting integration between the external and internal spaces. Escofet has supplied the Hebi, Abril and Grasshopper benches to furnish the seventeen courtyards and gardens which function as places of patients rest and healing.
