The project fills a small urban vacant plot, where there was formerly a deteriorated old building. The plot is narrow and irregular, although it bears the features of the typical construction of the Eixample district of Barcelona: density, great depth between party walls, an inner courtyard, a uniform cornice level and alignment of the façade.
The main objective of the building is to foster a community; one that lives and works in it. The concept is structured around a staircase and a central courtyard, which serves two living units on each landing, with flexible types suitable for a wide variety of uses. The ground floor is a shared workspace leading to a roof garden terrace for the whole community to enjoy.
The street-side façade is made of tinted and sandblasted concrete panels produced by Escofet, bringing the old artisan tradition of "sgraffito" stucco, so present in the memory of our city, to life in an industrial way.
The building type functions as a basic bioclimatic system; inertial slabs, a continuous well-insulated envelope, solar modulation in the openings and a central courtyard to activate the transverse ventilation of the rooms and their diffuse lighting.
Thus, the building aims to be a platform that facilitates new ways of living and working in urban centres by actively inserting itself into the local community.
